About Inclusive Martial Arts

Inclusive Martial Arts was created to help martial arts schools and organizations develop inclusive programs that are thoughtful, structured, and professionally sound.

This work did not begin as a concept or initiative it developed through years of hands-on experience teaching students with special needs in real martial arts environments.

Since 2015, our work has spanned multiple programs, class models, and organizations, supporting hundreds of students and families across a wide range of abilities. Along the way, we’ve worked directly with instructors, school owners, and program leaders who wanted to do inclusion well—but lacked clear systems, training, or confidence.

Inclusive Martial Arts exists to bridge that gap.

How This Work Began

Inclusive martial arts programs often start with good intentions—but without structure, they can quickly become overwhelming for instructors and inconsistent for students.

Our approach grew organically on the mat: adapting drills, modifying class flow, training assistants, communicating with families, and building systems that worked within the realities of martial arts schools, not around them.

Over time, it became clear that successful inclusion was not about isolated techniques—it required clear standards, instructor preparation, and sustainable program design.

Inclusive Martial Arts was created to formalize that experience into guidance other schools could trust.

Our Approach

We believe inclusive martial arts works best when it is:

Intentional — designed with clear goals, expectations, and boundaries

Structured — grounded in class management, progression, and safety

Ethical — respectful of students, families, and instructors

Sustainable — realistic for staffing, scheduling, and long-term growth

Our work focuses on helping schools move beyond trial-and-error by providing practical frameworks that instructors can apply with confidence.

This is not about lowering standards or creating separate systems that cannot be maintained. It is about thoughtful adaptation—preserving the integrity of martial arts while expanding access in responsible ways.

What Makes This Different

Inclusive Martial Arts is rooted in martial arts not borrowed models from outside disciplines.

Our work emphasizes:

  • Instructor confidence and preparation
  • Clear class structure and progression
  • Safety and predictability for students
  • Consistency across instructors and assistants
  • Programs that can be maintained long-term

Inclusion succeeds when schools are supported—not stretched thin.

Looking Ahead

Inclusive Martial Arts is committed to advancing professional standards for inclusive martial arts programs through consulting, training, and future certification pathways.

Our long-term vision is to help schools build programs that serve students with dignity, support instructors with clarity, and strengthen the martial arts community as a whole.
